How to Treat Burn Injuries by Yourself?

A burn injury may cause due to flames, chemical, liquids and electric shocks. When a burn injury becomes severe, then it takes a while to heal and cause scars in the skin. Generally the burn injury can be classified based on how deeply the tissues are affected. If the first degree burn happens such as swelling, skin redness can be treated by us. Other than this if the burn severely affected the face, hands, feet or genital then the only way is to get medical treatment immediately. For the first degree burns, simply follow these steps as first aid.

• Whenever a burn occurs the first thing to do is to cool the burned area that should be kept under the cold water for 15 minutes. This helps to decrease the swelling by taking heat away from the affected area. Don’t apply ice on a burn that causes frostbite.

• Clean the burned area with antibacterial soap and be sure not to rub the affected area too hard. Cleaning the affected area helps to prevent the scar and infection.

• Once the cleaning is completed then apply the counter antibiotic ointment to the burned area. Ointment speeds the process of healing and prevents inflection. It is also important to apply the ointment after bathing and changing of new bandages.

• Cover the affected area with a sterile gauze pad that helps to lessen the pain and protect skin blisters. This also prevents the airborne particles and dust sticking into the burnt area. Sterile gauze pad should be applied after cleaning and applying the ointment.

• You can also take the pain reliever tablets such as ibuprofen and aspirin that helps to relief the pain in the affected area. It is necessary to take the tablet as prescribed until the burn is fully healed.
