Most of us like to open their computer and to see the internal parts of it. However, we have some hesitation to open our computer due to fear that may cause any problem to the system. This article will help you to quit your hesitations and learn about how to install a new hard drive in your computer.
• Make sure the amount of space in the hard drive is enough for your operating system with all your personal files. Shut down your computer and unplug all the cables.
• Open the computer case by unscrewing and make sure that the case will contains the screw and clips. Keep in mind on placing the screws and clips in the place so that they don’t get lost.
• After opening the case, look the inside of the computer and find where the hard drive is located and plugged in. If the Hard drive is plugged with a small black end then it is a SATA hard drive. If it looks like ribbon or bunch of wires then it is IDE/ PATA hard drive.
• When your computer connected with IDE/PATA hard drive then make sure the jumper is set of Master. Most hard drives are connected differently that can be only noticed only by viewing the diagram on the hard drive that shows which jumper setting is Master.
• On installing a second or third hard drive then the jumper should be set to the slave setting, which makes the computer to know that there is an extra hard drive. Again view the jumper diagram and find what pins can put the jumper on.
• Unplug the cables of your old hard drive and replace with the new hard drive. If it is an extra hard drive then find the SATA or IDE cable and plug in to the new hard drive.
• Now put the case back, tight the screws and plug in all the removed cables then turn on your computer.
You must also need some computer knowledge before you try to install a hard drive. Also some of the computer companies will cancel your warranty if the computer case is opened.
